Metas, ideales, realidad y cambio

Me pareció cómico y extremadamente real.

GOALS, IDEALS, REALITY AND CHANGE

A friend recently put on Facebook a photo in which the goals of previous years were updated to the present (see photo above, Spanish only). I found it extremely funny and real. The picture in question scaled goals down. And that seemed to me tragic, cladded with poignant sarcasm, dangerous if you will, beyond the humor and reality to which it refers.

Let me explain: We know that a vision for our life is presented as an envisioning 'model', as it is a map to a territory. In when replicating any model, there are things that go as 'in the picture' and others do not. So what do we do when there are gaps between what is desired and what were achieved? Should we level down? Do we mock the goal? No. Categorical and absolutely: no. It is rather necessary to maintain a north, an orientation, a hierarchy of truths to which we appeal and strive for. I’m not talking of holding whim ideals. I’m saying to keep ideals firmly as our direction for finding fulfillment in the little and transcendent things of life. The ideal is, in itself, unattainable, if not, it would not be called ideal. And so it is important to remember that the map is not the territory and recognize that its role is nothing more and nothing less, to help us remember from what side of the world the sun rises up. It will never be the territory, but its guiding function remains valid and strong, although we may have cloudy and stormy days. A map, a compass, are valuable tools if and when they are maintained, consulted, used instead of forgotten, mocked or discarded.

Holding ideals and keeping them do not imply naïveté, but wisdom to recognize that they carry a tension between the perfect and perfectible. An enriching tension because on one hand points to something else while celebrating the accomplishments, without ignoring the opportunity for growth and improvement. We are a reflection of the Most High God, designed to perfection, hence the intrinsic need to grow and advance. I’m not just talking about standards for our marriage, children, parents, employment, education or family. I’m also talking about tiny issues that we tend to ignore and go eroding those values we hold or held.

So for this 2013 I present to you the idea of change more than prosperity. And I suggest the change by the power for mobilization and growth it involves. Imagine: grow like never before ... renew our existence ... Change is not easy. But if we close ourselves to change and worse, if we level down, we would be limiting self-destining ourselves to mediocrity. My wish for you, which it is also for me, is that we can change what limits our takeoff, our taking into higher altitudes, or impedes a continuous peaceful flight. May we reinvent ourselves without losing the essence, and that we can rid ourselves of loads and weights we aggravate the soul. And hopefully live in peace, from the inside out. Very happy 2013. God bless us.

Look, do not be like me / Estudie, no sea como yo

My mother used to say: Look, do not be like me. She is the only of four sisters who having all educational opportunities chose different paths: mother and wife. Years later, when resources yielded meager to support the weight of a household with six children added to the continued economic inestability of the nation,  her advice to me was loud and clear: Study. I witnessed how she got rid of her jewelry so I could go to my art and piano classes. My mother not only encouraged me to pursue an education; she invested herself in it.

We know that at the national level and on average, Latino students from kindergarten to high school are two years behind in their performance when compared to their white peers. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released its latest report entitled: Achievement Gaps: How Hispanic and White Students in Public Schools Perform in Mathematics and Reading on the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The report formalizes what educators already know:  Latino children score 20 points lower than White children in math and reading.

Most alarming of this reality is not the fact our kids are lagging behind: it is that it has been a constant for the past 20 years. This situation requires looking at the causes, at the reasons why. And regarding reasons and causes we’ll find two positions: those who say it is a socio-educational problem, where poverty rates affect teaching and learning styles and those who say it is a problem of mentality, a misfortunate cultural trait.

There is research to support both positions, but I think great strength exists in the middle. The lack of an optimum performance among Latino students is due to factors related to poverty and to cultural factors. Neither the one, nor the other can be defeated without leadership.

Latino leaders have an undeniable role in overcoming this shameful reality that has remained static for  twenty years. We can all do something. We must do something. Here are some ideas.

• Participate in PTA and encourage other Latino parents do so.
• Defend and advocate for immigrants and poor students not be unfairly assigned to special education classesfor put in the slow learners track.
• Educate teachers and the educational community at large about who we Latinos are to avoid perpetuating stereotypes.
• Reach out to Latino families that still do not handle the language explaining them how the school system works.
• Serve as mentors and tutors.
• Serve as an inspiration to our youth.
• Encourage our children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and neighbors: Study, study, study.
• Encourage high academic performance.
• Expect from our youth the best grades.

The narrowing of the achievement gap between Latino students and the rest of the population requires more than government funded programs to improve the quality of education; it demands the most intimate conviction that we can and must do something about it. My mother and hundreds of thousands of parents who value education have left us the example:  study, my daughter, study.

Debemos hacer algo. A continuación, presento algunas ideas.

• Motivar a nuestros hijos, a nuestros nietos, a nuestros sobrinos y vecinos: Estudie, estudie, estudie.

The narrowing of the achievement gap between Latino students and the rest of the population requires more than government funded programs to improve the quality of education; it demands the most intimate conviction that we can and must do something about it.

SOSPECHAS/ PEW AND I

I have my suspicions. No because I’m a person who doesn’t trust that easily.  I doubt that we are asking the right questions. Let me explain. Those of us who work in professions linked to the cultural and ethnic fields have our allies: sociology, demography, hermeneutics, and language. One of my allies is Pew. Pew never gives an opinion. Pew presents data. The application of the information they provide to specific situations is our task, on this side of the analysis.  Every study Pew publishes raises a flood of gurus and soothsayers. Pew recently conducted a survey on the identification of a national Hispanic leader. The answer: Disturbing, but not surprising. 64% said not knowing anybody, and 10% directly said 'none'. In other words, for 74% of respondents the idea of a national Latino leader is still unthinkable. And the gurus and soothsayers rehearse explanations:  Missing representativeness. Socio-political disconnection. Enormous challenges. Emerging leaders. Absorption. Immense opportunities. Integration.
To some extend it saddens me we cannot identify a Latino leader who represents the fragmentation and multiple juxtapositions we are. But at the same time, I think it is almost a logical result. However, it would terrify me if we did not have an answer for what kind of leaders we Latinos seek and value. And for that question we do have an answer, and it’s backed up by data.  I just said we make allies of different sciences in order to interpret trends.
The study is called The Nature and Impact of Latino Leadership. It is report by the National Community for Latino Leadership and presents the qualitative traits that Latinos seek in their leaders. These traits are clustered in four categories:
1 - Character
2 - Competence
3 - Compassion
4 - Community

58.9% of respondents said it is important for a leader to show character in their public relations and private life. The competence of the leader settles into second place with 11.8% of the respondents. Compassion, or the capacity to express compassion in the exercise of leadership, ranks third with 9.6% and work as a community servant takes 9.2% of the answers.
What does it mean then that we know what we want in a leader, but we cannot point to a Latino leader at the national level? Is there only the absence of a leader of the absence of a Latino leader fulfilling those virtues and characteristics we expect in a leader? What is the relationship between representaive leadership and leadership expectations from a Latino stand point?
I propose three possible answers: a-such a person of Latino origin or ethnicity does not exist, perhaps he or she is not born yet, b- this young Latino/a is in its formative years, is in the process of becoming a leader  and c-ethnicity is not an important characteristic for Latinos when it comes  to recognizing leadership traits. I lean towards the latter and I know, I'm opening the door for multiple opponents. I welcome them.
In light of the possible directions I just proposed, the questions to be asked are:  Is important for Latinos to have a national Latino leader to represent them? What is most important for Latinos representativeness or ethnicity? Is there a national leader that represents the majority of Latinos regardless of his/her etnicity?
Our answers to these questions may provoke a research from Pew. But for reasons I don’t have Pew is not asking the same questions I do. Pew and I are good friends but even friendships that pretend to be noble and long  are not perfect. Sometimes friendships are useful to confirm a hunch or to help processing questions nobody asks.

SOSPECHAS
Paso a explicarme.
Y me explayo:

IN EXCHANGE FOR WHAT? ¿A CAMBIO DE QUE?

In exchange for what? It is a question that unaware and generous people usually not ask themselves, it doesn’t even cross their minds. I'm not advocating a purely transactional behavior and vested interest.  I’m referring to the fact that usually Latinos, having ingrained in us a sort of universal fraternal spirit, plus the strong determination to move our communities forward are easy prey for political groups that cuddle us 'to get to know' the Latino community. You've been through it more than once. They come with issues that we care about such as family, education, immigrants. We introduce them, put them in contact with others, and invite them into our homes and meetings.  They come, talk, shake our hands and pose for a photo. Everyone is happy and pleased. Unaware and generous people usually do not realize that what happens in these interactions is a transaction of affinity (mutual), interest (mutual) and loyalty (mutual). If this condition of reciprocity is not met, then we do not have a dignifying relationship, nor democracy becomes a realistic endeavor.
We are close to an election year that clearly will find us at the center of controversies, debates and divisions. Believe me.  I'm not making up what I'm writing. In 2001 66% of stories about Latinos, presented by news networks had to do with crime, terrorism, poverty and illegal immigrants. Those of long term memory may recall that in 2002 there were elections for senators. So what? Well, for the 2012 presidential elections partisan machineries are already organizing to reach out to the famous and pendulum Latino vote. So what? Well that the general climate for Latinos will be uncomfortable to say the least.  But stop! As the saying goes: “It is not the pig's faut but of that who feeds the pig.”  In other words, it is time to prepare, to ask ourselves the question: In exchange for what, before a meeting with politicians. Here are five tips to keep in mind:
1 - Set the purpose: Do not go to the meeting, not organize one if only for the candidate to know the Latino community. Be more ambitious; ask yourself what do you want to accomplish at this meeting? And do not be so ambitious in terms of achievements. In this type of interactions, it is not about how many goals you set, but how clear is your goal. One clear objective, more than enough. So when your turn to speak comes up, you will then, remember it, and for heaven's sake, be brief.
2 - Make an agenda: What are the points you want to address to achieve your goal? An agenda will help you take control of the meeting, even if you are not the highest ranking person at the meeting. Who sets the agenda is in control. Please pass in advance your  agenda to your guests (including the politician); it’s a fine courtesy.
3 - Have clear examples of your concerns. The politicians will remember the story, 'the case' more than the issue behind the case. So make sure you have examples that really match the issue you're bringing up.
4 - Establish action steps: What do you want the audience to do after the meeting for you to feel that your goal has been achieved? A relaxed and harmonious atmosphere does not mean people are in clear on action steps to follow.
5 - Thank the politician and his assistants as well as your guests the time spent in preparation for and at the meeting. Again, it's a touch that you don't want to dismiss as silly.
Finally, I encourage to keep frequent contact with him or her or and with his/her staff. Politicians are our representatives, keeping that front and center is done through reminding them what issues you care about.

I acknowledge that I have not always followed the steps suggested here. When I did, I have obtained better results and that’s why I’m writing them down and sharing them. Yes. An electoral year is coming up. We must be prepared.

The Browning of America

Yesterday I had to explain to my colleagues what that of being Hispanic or Latino is. Not surprisingly, with a category as contrived as this classification, and used to divide by race, the first thing that crosses their minds is that Latino is a race. No. It is an ethnicity, a culture. Latinos can be of any race, national origin, religion and ancestry. So I do not quite understand when the media are bent about the browning of America. On top of that  we tend to ignore this reductionism  and add to it  by reproducing it, opening wide the doors to perpetuating stereotypes. I have Latino friends of all colors and judging from the mixtures that they are creating, I do not necessarily know if we Latinos will darken or lighten this nation. Regardless, it would really be dignifying that when thinking or speaking of us Hispanics, a trait different of the skin color (debatable) will come out to the front as the defining feature and characteristic of the Latinos. Because to be honest, neither the color, nor the outward appearance is what counts to weight the influence of the Latino population; its contributions to the soul of America what matters. It is common knowledge that in 25 years, 1 in 4 people in the United States will be Latino. This brings up this question: What is the quintessential feature of Latinos, beyond skin color or physical appearance,  so ubiquitous that the general population will recognize as our trait? We like to puff out our chest with the cultural values that fill us with pride:  love for family, friendship, dedication to work. But these noble values seem not to be the indicators that seduce public policies that could catapult the influence of Latinos. It occurs to me that the indicators that measure our impact are: 1-educational level, 2-faith, 3-values and worldview,4- political participation, 5-buying power and credit capacity. So I propose we familiarize ourselves with these cultural areas  because I repeat, very soon, the here and now will be a very different reality. Being at the center or at the periphery of such a reality will depend on us. How we name ourselves, how we see ourselves, the language we speak. And I'm not talking about abandoning our beautiful language; I’m rather speaking of language as thinking process and as action, leading and communicating in a way that makes us visible (because we are already in sight). If we fail to do this, we’ll be only seen as a chromatic phenomenon.  I propose  informing  ourselves on the indicators that count while participating in the  community and civic life of our nation. Only then the browning of America will be valuable.

Right here, right now

I've been thinking about the demographic indicators that show us as the largest minority in this country. And I've been thinking about all the noise it has generated. Or not. Maybe not the one we should be interested in the most as thinking beings and contributors to this society. Let me explain:  The fact that we grow as people does not mean we have 1-unity, 2-credibility, 3-political weight, 4 – purpose or a teleological view that as an ethnic group we need to once and for all, if  this chimera is possible, be taken seriously as a human group able to influence in this nation’s destiny. And I'm not trying to expand any debate about border identities, territorial conquest, unacceptable abuses, border security and obsolete immigration policies. I am rather talking about a kind of self-leadership that requires us to delve into the soul of our culture and the culture in which we are embedded to find out the purpose of this overwhelming reality. Internal noise, I mean. That’s what we need.  Noise, not stunning because it is foreign, but the noise that is felt inside the chest, making us uneasy and captivating  us because it is the expression of an inner revolution. Why are we here? What is the Latino/a's contribution to the founding values of USA? These questions cannot be answered from the collective without first doing a search in first-person, singular. That’s why I talk about self-leadership and soul searching. Only then, when we become able to see each other’s faceted, multi-ethnic and diverse face, this great juxtaposition of identities, geographies and values we represent, statistics will have a connotation that up to today I have not seen arising.
The day comes when the here and now will make up a very different reality, and hopefully by then we may have already found purpose. And not much time is left. Determining our mission as a community is an urgency imposed by history itself.
